Vineyards: The grapes for the Piattelli Grand Reserve Malbec are grown in our vineyards located in Agrelo, Luján de Cuyo, at an altitude of 3,937 feet above sea level. The vines are grown in loam, deep and stony soil that favors the pre-draining of excess of water. The mild and warm climate and scarce rainfall (less than 250 mm per year) contributes in an incomparable way to the production of the Piattelli Grand Reserve Malbec. The irrigation is carried out in a traditional way, though furrows, with water coming from the Mendoza River. The yield of this vineyard is of 6,000 kg per hectare.
Harvest: Picked by hand between April 2nd to 5th, clusters carried out in boxes of 18 kg.
Vinification: Once the grapes are received in the winery, they are de-stemmed, and then moved into stainless steel tanks (capacity lower than 10,000 kg). This allows us to manage this process by hand with out the use of pumps. After 24 hours, twenty-percent of the juice (sangria) is extracted to increase the relation skin/ pulp in order to obtain a wine of a higher concentration. After carrying out all the necessary controls to achieve the desired structure, and once the alcoholic fermentation is finished, the wine was placed in French oak barrels to complete the malolactic fermentation. The wine is then aged for one year, during which it is regularly tasted by our winemakers.
Aging: 13 months in French oak barrels.
Varietal Composition: 100% Malbec.
Tasting Notes: The Piattelli Grand Reserve Malbec 2007 is deep burgundy color with aromas that remind us of black fruits. The aging in oak allows the wine to develop the vanilla and dark chocolate aromas. Flowery aromas are also present. In the mouth, sweet tannins, characteristic of the Malbec emerge, within its great structure, surrounded by a buttery and long finish.
